Is life really that complicated or do we just make it that way? Well, according to Mike Dowd, author of Coming Home, decision-making isn’t always so simple. It seems that every choice we make impacts not only our own life but also, the lives of others. But does it have to be so complex?Dowd has transitioned from a non-fiction writer to an amazing storyteller in his recent novel about Tyler Foster, a young college student/athlete who has dreams of becoming a professional golfer. Tyler walks in the shadow of his small-town hero father who was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and he struggles to become his own man as opposed to the son of a famous athlete. This is only one of the many obstacles that complicates Tyler’s young life so fasten your seatbelt as Dowd takes you on an amazing journey through numerous fragile relationships in Tyler’s life including an on-again off-again romance with his high school sweetheart and a strained – maybe broken – relationship with the golf coach who got Tyler to the place where he just might have a shot at the big time. This story grows like a snowball headed down a steep mountain slope covered in fresh powder. Although easy to follow, you will be amazed at the complexity and the size of the tale. Just when you anticipate one thing, something else pops up that you never saw coming. Dowd’s story telling is the perfect combination of the excitement we get watching the great golf matches, such as the Masters, and the anticipation of those exceptional TV mini-series such as Lonesome Dove. The most difficult time to put the book down is at the end of each chapter because you can’t stand the anticipation of what happens next. The twists and surprises will amaze even the most skillful prognosticator. At the risk of throwing out and overused cliché, Coming Home is a page turner that starts fast and doesn’t slow down until everything comes together in the final chapter.People have described Coming Home as a page-turner, a cliff-hanger, and a book that you just can’t put down. Each of these terms is appropriate for Dowd’s newest creation which in my opinion earns a five-star rating. One warning that I offer; have a flexible schedule once you open this book because by the end of Chapter 1, you won’t want to put it down. And on a final note, I am an avid golfer and my wife does not golf at all. We both give Coming Home a 5-star rating. It does not disappoint.
