I could not put this amazing work of non-fiction down. It tells the story of one family, two parents, four kids, from before World War II through the 1980's. Their history is broken down by year and told chronologically. If you lived during any of these years, you will relive those times and be reminded of cultural phenomena that you have forgotten. The author captures it all - post-war baby boom, dads at work, moms in the kitchen, rock and roll, youthful rebellion, fear of nuclear annihilation, assassinations, abortion, out of wedlock pregnancies, successes and failures at school, yoga, est, gay liberation, Marimekko, Carnaby Street, Vietnam, divorce, interfaith marriage, AIDS, annoying mothers-in-law . . . it is all here and it is all true. This is a sociological and anthropological documentation of these eras in American life, and at the same time a compelling easy read that you will speed through. Highly recommend.
