Description
Product Description Kristin Korb treasures the jazz tradition. She is known for her collaborations with Ray Brown, Bruce Forman, Jeff Hamilton and more who have all taken note of her incredible sense of swing. On Kristin's 2013 release What's Your Story?, she dug deep into her long-standing relationship with classic jazz material and those musical personalities who influenced her. Out of those relationships and experiences, a more developed and diverse musician is emerging and Finding Home. Love brought the American bassist and singer to Denmark in 2011. This September, Kristin Korb releases her most personal CD yet. Finding Home features Kristin's stories of love, travel, language lessons and the peace she has found in her marriage and her adopted country. Instead of her 'korbinated' arrangements of jazz standards, Kristin has made the bold leap to write all original material to fit her life experiences. 'Something to Celebrate' jumps out of the gate with horns and the declaration, 'Great news 'cause today it is your day!' reflecting the excitement of new adventure and the journey to come. 'Growing up in Montana and living in Los Angeles, I never imagined myself in another country, speaking another language, or seeing myself and my native land in a completely different light.' Korb continues, 'The adjustments aren't easy. All you've known and trusted (friends, family, language, culture, etc.) is gone.' '58 Boxes' expresses the longing in that sometimes agonizing transition period: 'Seven days of rain as I look out my window. Missing family and friends. Sorry for myself. Change is hard on me sometimes, but I know this feeling soon will end'. For the recording sessions, Kristin assembled some of Denmark's finest musicians: Magnus Hjorth (piano), Snorre Kirk (drums), Jacob Fischer (guitar), Gerard Presencer (trumpet), Steen Nikolaj Hansen (trombone), Karl-Martin Almqvist (tenor sax) and Danish rock guitar legend Poul Halberg. Many of them, coincidentally, happen to also be expats (Norway, Sweden and England). Their shared relocation experiences bring extra feeling and expression to the tracks. Korb's musical influences are as varied as her experiences living in Denmark. 'I didn't want a 'jazzy' notion to dictate the direction of the songs. I wanted the stories to guide the feel of the music.' This openness is most obvious on 'Invisible' where Poul Halberg's rock guitar fills reflect the challenges of learning a new language and becoming invisible when you can't follow along or participate in a conversation. 'I'm thrilled with my life here. I have my love, my career and larger circle of friends and colleagues than ever before. Finding Home isn't just my journey. This is for anyone who has made a major life adjustment. Regardless of where we live, we need to be at home within ourselves, enjoying the moments as they come and treasuring the people and kindness around us.' Review A home isn't just a physical space and a place to hang your hat; a home is wherever an individual finds comfort, acceptance, and personal fulfillment. On Finding Home, bassist-vocalist Kristin Korb explores the journey and process that brought her to such a place in her life. Korb, who grew up in Montana, found a new home in California a long time ago. She studied at the University of California at San Diego, became a pupil of the late Ray Brown, and eventually set up shop in 2002 in Los Angeles, developing a career as teacher, recording artist, and live performer. But that wasn't meant to be the end of her search for home. Love later walked in and altered the course of Korb's life. In 2011, she packed up her things, said goodbye to L.A., and moved her life to Copenhagen, Denmark. Through nine original numbers, Finding Home chronicles Korb's move and the emotional highs and lows that come with such a transition. There's sunny, keep-your-head-up enthusiasm in some places "Something To Celebrate", and trepidation and self-pitying in others ("58 Boxes"). Along the way, Korb also details the process of learning a new language ("Up Again"), touches on the difficulties and rifts that can come with such a move ("The Letter"), and basks in the thought of taking time to soak in life as she now knows it ("Finding Home"). No single style of music dominates here, as Korb works different musical angles with each song. Sunny swingers ("Something To Celebrate"), ballads ("58 Boxes"), a perky Brazilian-based scenario ("It's Spring"), a wonderfully saucy NOLA-influenced number ("Happy For Me"), and a pop-based piece ("Invisible") are all part of the package. In keeping with the tone and theme of this project, Korb works with a crack crew of Denmark's finest players, many of which are also expatriates. Pianist Magnus Hjorth's versatility is key here, the three horn players trumpeter Gerard Presencer, tenor saxophonist Karl-Martin Almqvist, and trombonist Steen Nikolaj Hansen all prove to be strong soloists, and the rest of the band does a fine job capturing the essence of each number. As vocalist and bassist, Korb is solid and engaging throughout, upholding her reputation as one of the great double-threat talents in the jazz world. Kristin Korb may be living a life she never imagined, but it seems to really suit her. She appears to be loving life now that she's found her true home. --AllAboutJazz.com - Dan Bilawsky
